Live Music at the Taos Jewish Center
°I could listen to Alisa and Kimball sing all night.¨C Jim Messina
The TJC and Open Hearth present an evening concert with award winning singer-songwriters, Alisa Fineman and Kimball Hurd on Thursday August 7th, at 8:00pm. Alisa and Kimball played to a full house in Taos several years ago at an event jointly sponsored by the TJC and Sheva Cafe.
Fineman and Hurd offer up a feast of original songs as well as world music
from ancient and contemporary Jewish traditions. Their gorgeous harmonies,
exquisite blend of acoustic instruments and well crafted lyrics speak directly to the heart and refresh your outlook on life. Alisa and Kimball are good medicine for body and soul. Their well-crafted songs speak of the joys and struggles that shape our lives and what it means to care well for each other and the places we live.
Named °Best Folk Musician" four years in a row by Monterey Bay's Coast Weekly, singer-songwriter and Kerrville New ¨Folk Winner Alisa Fineman is renown for her °earthy voice, dusky overtones and depth of emotion" (Moab Times). Alisa is beautifully complimented by gifted multi-instrumentalist, Grammy Award winning singer-songwriter and founding member of the acclaimed
acoustic trio, City Folk, Kimball Hurd. Alisa and Kimball recently returned
from singing on Rosie O'Donnell's R-Family Cruise to Mexico. And ever
expanding their musical worlds, both performed at Carnegie Hall in June of
2007 with Cheryl Anderson's Cabrillo Chorus.
Their talents and gracious stage presence have earned them national acclaim and main stage performances at such prestigious festivals as Strawberry
Music, Kate Wolf Memorial and Kerrville Folk Festivals, Robinson Jeffers
Festival in Carmel, CA and South by Southwest in Austin, Texas. °Alisa and
Kimball are easily among the best of the next generation of songwriters," says Tom Paxton. In addition to their own careers they have toured with Martin Simpson, Tom Paxton, Paul Reisler of Trapezoid and performed with John Gorka. Alisa also serves as the Cantorial Soloist for Congregation Beth Israel in Carmel.
We hope that this will be the first of many events co-sponsored by the TJC
and Open Hearth. Open Hearth is a Taos based non-profit community arts
organization whose purpose is to build creative communities in Taos and New
Mexico. Their central activities currently focus on: Open Hearth Salon
series in the Taos Plaza Theater Loft; Open Hearth Poetry Project, and
Seasonal Celebrations, a series of children's events occurring on the
Solstice or Equinox. Look for the first one on June 21 on Taos Plaza
featuring Katie Woodall. To be added to the Open Hearth email list or if you

Tisha B'Av commemorates the destruction of both the first and second temple, as well as the Jewish expulsion from Spain. It is a day of fasting, of sitting low to the ground, of seeing a world that has fallen and crumbled, of crying out to God, and in the midst of sadness and despair finding the ground from which all holiness arises. According to our sages it is on Tisha B'Av that the Mashiach (Messianic consciousness) will be born. From despair comes hope, from the ashes of destruction come the wings of peace. Please join Mia Cohen and friends for a reading and chanting of the book of Lamentations, an evening (Maariv) prayer service, and a circle of sharing & chanting.
