God On Trial
Thursday August 12th, 7:30pm
A film to make you think and one which could truly upset many people. Set in Auschwitz a group of prisoners decide to place God on trial for breaking his covenant with the Jews. The question becomes, “Is God responsible for the murderous actions of the Nazis in their attempt to eradicate the Jews. How could he allow this to happen?” The selection for those chosen for death is to happen later in the day. Who is to be chosen?
Why is this happening? Is it a punishment for straying from God’s laws, a sacrifice, a test of faith, a cleansing or purification as in the Flood, a consequence of free will, or indifference as in Job?
There are those who argue that God does not exist, those that argue that God has deserted the Jewish people, and those that argue that God does exist.
The ending is shocking and reveals no answer but leaves us with questions about our relationship with God. Bill Westbury will lead the discussion. Suggested Donation is $7 ($5 for TJC members)

Award winning Taos poet, Cathy Strisik, in conjunction with the Chesed Project, will begin offering monthly sessions for people with Alzheimer’s disease and their caregivers, to stimulate memory and discussion through the use of poetry and visuals such as paintings and photographs. Classes will take place at the Taos Public Library. As Larry Schreiber MD Taos physician for 34 years, notes " With the graying of our population the prevalence of cognitive impairment goes up geometrically. Let the rest of us not forget this important segment of our society. The effect of poetry in stimulating the memory impaired can only be positive for the individual and their family."
Strisik has been active in the writing community of Taos, New Mexico for over 27 years as a poet, poetry mentor for children, and reading specialist for children with learning disabilities. Strisik is the author of the recently published poetry collection, Thousand-Cricket Song.

A Preparation for the High Holidays with Rabbi Min Kantrowitz
This workshop is designed to deepen our preparations for the turning of the year, for returning to our most true selves, to get ready to stand before the Holy One.
It assumes that attendees are committed to doing deep inner work in preparation for renewal and transformation. We will study text, chant and meditate, revising the year that is about to depart and developing our kavanot (intentions) for the year to come.
Rabbi Min Kantrowitz serves as a Rabbi for the Jewish Family Services and travels throughout New Mexico. She is the author of Counting the Omer: A Kabbalistic Meditation Guide" an innovative meditation guide published by Gaon Books of Santa Fe that follows Kabbalistic teachings day by day, giving the reader suggestions for each of the forty-nine days of meditation in the period of the Omer.
As the Director of the Jewish Community Chaplaincy Program of Jewish Family Service of New Mexico, Rabbi Kantrowitz provides spiritual support and pastoral care services to the Jewish community in the state. She is a sought after speaker and teacher, having conducted services, workshops and lectures across the United States and Europe.
Rabbi Kantrowitz is a very warm, caring rabbi whose teachings come from the heart and go to the heart. We are fortunate to have her come again this year to share her teachings with us. The workshop will take place on Sunday August 22nd from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. Suggested donation: $10 ($7.00 members).
