Perfect for a Sunday morning in November…brunch, a good movie, and engaging conversation. “THE BAND’S VISIT” (2007) provides ample food for thought on the shared aspects of human nature that transcend cultural, language, and historic divisions. The film first made headlines by being disqualified as Israel’s foreign-language submission to the 2008 Academy Awards —Oscar referees felt that too much of the dialogue is in English, which it may well be, though it’s English of the sort that even most native speakers will need subtitles to parse. (Don’t worry, they’re there.) This heavily accented dialect is the only common tongue shared by the characters — members of an Egyptian policemen’s orchestra booked to perform at the opening of an Arab cultural center, and the denizens of the desert Israeli backwater, where the musicians become waylaid after taking the wrong bus. For 36 hours, these unlikely companions grope awkwardly for satisfying ways to connect.
While nothing major seems to occur, what's experienced by all of these people is monumental, as writer-director Eran Kolirin, in his debut feature exhibits a magnificently deft touch in casting each encounter as a case study in cross-cultural communion. Kolirin's empathy for his characters runs deep, and his film remains intensely focused on their conflicted feelings, most piercingly with regard to two middle-aged souls who, like everyone else in this tale, may be separated by cultural/political/geographic barriers, but are conjoined by that most universal of conditions: loneliness. And as each mini-narrative invariably moves from a state of uneasy separation to one of unspoken but undeniable spiritual/emotional togetherness, what Kolirin achieves is—given our current hit-you-over-the-head cinematic climate—just about remarkable: a tender, poignant allegory for Arab-Israeli tensions that never makes a single overt gesture toward articulating its larger concerns.
A delicious bagel brunch and discussion on the topic of “Brothers and sisters under the skin.” will follow the film.
Suggested donation: $10 (TJC members, $7). Reserve by November 13th by phone or e-mail. 758-8615, tjc@newmex.com.
